Answer:
Ever since I went on a vacation to Folly Beach, South Carolina, the grackle has been among my favorite birds. This is, in part, because of how crafty and opportunistic they are.
These guys have little to no fear of humans, something I’d never really seen in a wild animal before.
Whenever I went to one of those open-air breakfast places, they would swoop in and steal food directly off the plates of people who had left to go to the bathroom, picking off whatever they thought tasted the best.
Like so:
They could be sitting on the table right next to you, side eyeing your plate, and wouldn’t fly away until you were within a foot or so of their personal space.
My favorite experience with them, though, was seeing one poke a hole in a plastic bag, and then open a bag inside of that bag, just so they could snatch a single biscuit from one of the families that had went out to go swimming.
Grackles have become so accustomed to urban life that some people think they are an invasive bird, even though they are, in fact, native to North America:
Plus, they have earsplittingly loud, annoying calls, and have been known to mimic noises/other birds:
The grackle is pretty much my spirit animal.
Annoying? Check.
Intelligent? Check.
Loud? Check.
Kind of a pest? Double check.
Except for looks (the grackles are far more attractive than I am) they fit all the criteria for representing who I am as a person.
