When I was five, I was a princess, the most beautiful princess in all of the land. I was wrapped in silks and spent my time in the most gorgeous castle a girl could ever imagine. Sometimes though, I got bored in my castle, and longed for a wild adventure. So, some days, I would take off my gown and lay my tiara down before dawning war paint and leather, and I would venture alone through the woods with all of the wild animals. This is because stories allowed me to be whatever I wished and go wherever I wanted. On road trips, I would sit and write stories, having my grandmother help me when necessary. When I was done with my creation, I would grin and say, “alright, it’s done!” My grandparents would patiently listen to my story, reacting appropriately with “oohs” and “ahhs.” Then, when I let them know it was their turn, they would tell me a story in return, often making me the lead character. I have always loved reading and writing and I have always been encouraged to do so. I started learning to read and write when I was about four years old, starting with bed time stories and alphabet books. Now, seventeen years later, I am still learning, constantly, how to improve my writing and communication skills because I am a Communications and Media Studies major. When I think of literacy and all of its five components, I smile, because for me, my literary abilities are perhaps my favorite part of myself.
