किसी दम्पति के पास एक अद्भुत मुर्गी थी । ‘अद्भुत’ इसलिए कि वह प्रतिदिन सोने का एक अंडा देती थी । ऐसी जादुई मुर्गी पाकर वे बहुत प्रसन्न थे तथा अपने को भाग्यशाली समझते थे । सोने का अण्डा बेच-बेचकर उन्होंने बहुत-सा धन इकट्ठा कर लिया था ।
एक दिन उन्होंने सोचा कि मुर्गी प्रतिदिन एक ही अंडा देती है । इसका अर्थ यह हुआ कि इसके पेट में बहुत-से अंडे होंगे । अगर सभी अंडे उन्हें एक साथ मिल जाएं तो वे शहर के सबसे धनवान व्यक्ति बन जाएंगे । ‘लेकिन अंडे एक साथ मिलें कैसे?’ वे मन ही मन सोचने लगे ।अचानक एक दिन उन्होंने एक योजना बना डाली । दूसरे दिन दोनों ने मिलकर एक चाकू से मुर्गी का पेट चीर डाला और भीतर सोने के अंडे खोजने लगे । मगर वे मूर्ख सोने के अंडे खोजते-खोजते परेशान हो गए पर अंडे नहीं मिले ।
मिलते भी कैसे ? मुर्गी के पेट में अंडे थे ही नहीं । उन लालचियों को प्रतिदिन एक सोने का अंडा मिलता था, वह भी उनके लालच के परिणामस्वरूप मिलना बंद हो गया । मुर्गी पेट चीरे जाने के कारण तड़प-तड़प कर मर गई ।
निष्कर्ष : लालच का फल बुरा होता है ।
