During a siege of the fort of Jhansi, Bai offered stiff resistance to the invading forces and did not surrender even after her troops were overwhelmed. रानी लक्ष्मीबाई का जन्म 19 नवंबर, 1828 को काशी के असीघाट, वाराणसी में हुआ था. इनके पिता का नाम मोरोपंत तांबे और माता का नाम 'भागीरथी बाई' था. इनका बचपन का नाम 'मणिकर्णिका' रखा गया परन्तु प्यार से मणिकर्णिका को 'मनु' पुकारा जाता था. मनु जब मात्र चार साल की थीं, तब उनकी मां का निधन हो गया.
