We received an overwhelming number of wide-ranging and inspiring responses to the challenge of writing a story on the theme of ‘belonging’. The judging panel, headed by Cortina Butler, Director of Literature at the British Council, was extremely impressed with the quality of the entries:
‘We have learned so much from reading everyone’s work about the lives of young people growing up in the Commonwealth – both what is common to us all and what is distinct’, explained Cortina. ‘What all the entries clearly demonstrate is how important a sense of belonging is to every one of us, wherever we live.’
Read the selected stories, and the panel's comments about each one, in the sections below. In recognition of the number of quality stories received, a further nine entries from across the two age categories were also commended.
