When little Andy leaves his room, his toys come alive and form a whole society under the leadership of his favorite doll, Woody the cowboy. The boy also ignores that each birthday is a time of anguish for his toys, because they feel really terrified to think that they can be supplanted by new ones. Woody is the only toy that does not worry, because he believes his status as Andy's best friend is guaranteed.
However, the cowboy mudno collapses when one of Andy's last birthday gifts is a Buzz Lightyear, a sophisticated and modern space toy that is having great success at that time. This intrepid space adventurer, almost unintentionally, wins Andy's total affection, so he goes on to just play with him and marginalize Woody. The cowboy, tremendously resentful, will forge a plan to get rid of Buzz Lightyear, but that will only be the beginning of intense adventures in which both toys, ironically, will end up becoming the best friends in the world.
