The leaf's structure is described below :

1. It is a structure that is of flat type and is borne on the stem.

2. The leaf gets developed from the node and its origin is from the shoot apical meristem.

3. The arrangement of leaves is in acropetal order on the stem.

4. The leaf has 3 main parts. These are :

i) Leaf Base

It is most lowest portion of the leaf. Two small structures called stipules which are leaf like may be borne on the leaf base.

ii) Petiole

It is the cylinder shaped structure that joins the leaf base with the lamina.

iii) Lamina

Basic structure of leaves consists many parts like leafbase, petiole, lamina ,midrib, vein,      stipule.

Explanation:

  • The leaf is green flat thin and expanded. They are lateral appendage of stem which is borne at a node and bears a bud in its axil .
  • It is exogenous in origin ad develops from the leaf primordium of a shoot apex .The leaf do not produces apical bud and thus the growth of leaf is limited.

PARTS OF LEAF:

  1. Leaf base (hypopodium) : The basal part of leaf by which it is attached to stem is called leaf base .In some leguminous plants leaf base may be become swollen which is called the pulvinus.
  2. Petiole (mesopodium):  The stalk of leaf is called petiole. it helps in holding the blade towards light. long thin ,flexible, petiole thereby cools the leaf and brings fresh air to leaf surface.
  3. Lamina(epipodium):   Is the green flat part of the leaf with veins and veinlets .
  4. Midrib:  A middle prominent vein is known midrib .
  5. Stipule:  Many species of plants have small outhgrowth for the protection of young leaves  and axillary buds called the stipules.
