The prince always remain happy when he was alive; hence his courtiers called him ‘happy prince’. After his death a statue of him was erected at a central place. Statue was ornamented with gold and precious stones. His eyes were studded with sapphire. The statue could see the whole city and its misery. Rich people were enjoying lavish life. On the other hand poor people were suffering and starving. He was moved by seeing the pity condition of his subjects. With the help of a swallow he tried to help the people. He gave all his gold and precious stones to needy people. He sacrificed his eyes to help playwright and a match girl. He was a kind hearted and loving prince

Iswaran, Mahendra’s servant, was very devoted to him. He was not only a very welltrained and wonderful cook but also a good story teller. He was fond of reading thrillers and his narrations were influenced from those styles. He had to give up his job due to a practical joke played on Mahendra, his master. Life was not possible for Mahendra without him, as he was his asset, and he started living totally isolated.

MESSAGE

The Happy Prince” gives many important messages. The first message is that we must spread happiness around us if we wish to be happy. It is useless to mount statues with gold and jewels when the people are hungry. The Prince could be happy only as long as sorrow was not allowed to enter his palace. Once he saw pain, suffering and injustice, even his lead heart cried. The next message is that the disparity and sorrow in society can be overcome by compassion, generosity and sharing. The generous prince and the gentle swallow sacrificed themselves to bring happiness to the poor and the needy. However, their deaths did not end their lives. The redemptive power of love made them live forever as the precious and chosen ones of God.
