Karl and Klaus trudged wearily through the woods. Traders, they were and they had to pass through a dark forest. They had done it a few times but this time was different. They have never crossed it at night. It was said the forest was enchanted and full of dark things. They were tired and wary of every sound and movement and slowly shuffled, lest they disturb a sleeping animal. In a thicket ahead, they saw light.
They moved towards it and in the clearing saw a magnificent old castle, fit for an emperor. They stumbled in, two desperate travelers looking for respite from the rain and found it lit and warm, but deserted. They wandered through, looking for its owner but found a table with a lamp and a fest fit for a conqueror, a table, strangely, set for 2.
They ate their fill and warmed themselves by the inviting hearth but their host did not show. They carried on, leaving behind a thank you note for the scrumptious food. They carried on their journey, on a night with a full stomach and a full moon. However, this time, bandits, wolves and spirits stopped them but they fought them off with surprising ease. They fought like champions. When they reached their village, none of the villagers knew of them.
None of them could recognize them, their appearances had been altered, and even their own kin were not able to identify them. Far away, in a castle in an enchanted forest, a sorcerer laughed at the scene on his crystal ball, wondering who his next victims would be. So if you’re travelling through a forest, do not stop at the most beautiful castle you’d see, carry on. For you might not be the same when you leave.
