Answer:
was raining heavily. Karthik was all alone at home. The sound of thunder frightened him. It looked as if gods and asuras were fighting in the sky. He went up to the bookshelf and took out a novel. Prem Chand has always been his favourite. Again there was a frightening sound of thunder. He tried to concentrate on the novel but another interruption drew his attention. The sound of the doorbell alarmed him. They couldn’t be his parents. He looked at the wall-clock. It was ten minutes past three. Usually, they came after six in the afternoon. The door-bell sounded again. Who could have been at the door? “Who is there?” he cried. No reply. Another ringing. He was instructed by his parents not to open the door without proper identification. “Should I answer the bell or not?”, thought Karthik. He should first prepare himself for an unpleasant encounter. He went inside the store and came out with a hammer. He hid it behind the door. He could use it if the emergency made him do so. But still, he must make him sure who was at the door before he opened it. He cried once again, “Who’s at the door?” No reply. No movement of steps either. He took the hammer and held it in one hand and proceeded to open the door. There was a roaring sound of laughter. “Karthik — O Karthik. Why don’t you open the door?” There was no doubt about it. It was his father who was calling him standing at the door in the rain. I rushed forward to open the door. “Why are you holding the hammer in your hand?” asked my father. What could he say? He fumbled for words. His father gave a broad smile. Perhaps, he could understand Karthik’s predicament.
