It was a chilly morning as birds outside my bedroom window chirped their sweet melodious songs when I heard the doorbell ring. I jumped out of my bed and dashed downstairs for the door as I was expecting my study partner Eleanor. Surprisingly as I opened the door, I could see no one close to my vicinity; however, on the ground, I felt my leg stepping on something that felt like a piece of paper only to see an intricately patterned screen envelope. It looked both formal and beautiful with a hidden pattern of colorful roses and Ancient Dutch architecture.
At the top, it read “The pleasure of your company in the requirement at the Young Scientists Scholarship Award Program Dinner on the Sunday 6th July Two thousand and nineteen at six o’clock at ‘The Canal Restaurant' 6th Avenue, New Delhi.” I could feel feeble feet’s excitement rushing down my spine as I giggled to myself in disbelief. I had finally been handpicked to be among the three top students to go and study at Harvard.
Shortly, Eleanor arrived, and I shared the great news about my scholarship. We then both left for the library as we had planned earlier as we waited for our parents to come and pick us for dinner later in the evening.
The doorbell rang and I went over to answer it. However, when I opened the door, there was no one there. I looked out to both sides but could not find anyone. Just as I turned to close the door, I felt that I had stamped something on the floor. I looked down to find an invitation in an intricate envelope on the ground. Curious, I bent down and took the envelope and walked inside.
Just as I was about to take out the invitation, the bell rang again. This time, I was surprised to find my best friend on the other side of the door. After hugging each other, I called her inside and told her about the invitation. She gave me a hearty laugh and pulled out more of such invitations. Then, my friend told me that it was she who had dropped the invitation of her sister’s wedding and moved aside before I opened the door because she wanted to give me a surprise.
