Once there was a farmer who had just been blessed with four sons. He felt very glad, and yet was worried as he didn't own much land and in turn did not have enough money to feed his sons. He used to work hard, day and night, to feed his family. Days went by, and his sons grew up to be young adults. They started to help their father on the land. They worked diligently, without breaking a sweat. Finally, when the farmer grew old, he decided it was time for distribution of the property. He beckoned his sons. But it didn't go as well as the farmer thought. His sons started quarreling among themselves, as to which brother deserved more land. Each son presented his case speaking of the hard work they had done and how much deserving and responsible they were. At first, the quarrel didn't mean much to the farmer but as time went by, it just increased. One day, the brothers engaged into a brawl in the open market. The farmer had never faced such shame before. He tried to sleep but never could, seeing his own family tearing apart in front of him. He gave the situation a good thought and finally decided on something. The next day, he called his sons to meet him at the outskirts. When they arrived, the farmer picked up four twigs on the ground and handed each to his sons. Then he asked them, " Try breaking it. "
The brothers were perplexed. But they did what their father said. The twigs broke at once. One of the brothers asked, " Father, what is the point of all of this? Why don't just tell us what you are going to do with your property? "
The farmer said nothing, but just smiled at him. He collected all the twigs from the them, and united the bundle.
Then he gave the bundle to his son who asked the question and said, " Son, now try to break the bundle. "
The son couldn't. The bundle was quite strong.
Then the farmer started speaking, " If you quarrel and distance yourself from each other, you are alone. Being alone, you are just as strong as a single twig. But if you come together, and support each other, then you are as strong as the bundle. Nobody can defeat you easily. Remember these words, united we stand, divided we fall. Never forget them. "
The brothers were shell shocked. Their faces were full of guilt as understanding dawned on them.
Later, when the farmer died, quite happily in his sons' arms, he knew he had done right. The sons divided the property equally and never conflicted again. It was a life lesson for them.
