The Carter And Hercules
It was a rainy day. A carter was driving a cart along a muddy road in a village. The road became almost impassable. The cart was moving slowly. Suddenly it sank into (fell into) deep mud and one of the wheels stuck so fast in the mud that the cart did not move an inch. The carter goaded and whipped the bulls (bullocks), but the cart did not move on. The carter sat idle gazing at the cart and prayed to Hercules, the god of strength, for help.
Hercules appeared before him at his prayer. He took him to task for his idleness. (He reproached him for his idleness). He said to him, “Stand up, lazy fellow, encourage your bullocks and put your own shoulder to the wheel. Then my help will go to you.’’ The carter got down from the cart, put his shoulder to the wheel and whipped the bullocks. The cart began to move as before.
Moral: God helps those who help themselves.
