  • The estimation of geological time,both in relative and absolute terms,has  been a matter of prime concern for the Stratigraphers .
  • Stratigraphy is concerned with the description of rock successions and their interpretation in terms of time scale.
  • It also provides the basis  of historical geology, and its principles and methods have found application in  fields like petroleum geology and archaeology.
