Streamer goes downstream and cover the distance between two ports in 4 hours while it cover the same distance upstream in 5 hours . If the speed of the stream is 2 km per hour , find the speed of the stream in still water.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the speed of the streamer in still water be x km/h .

Then ,

The speed of the streamer while going downstream = ( x + 2 ) km/h

And the speed of the streamer while going upstream = ( x - 2 ) km/h

Distance covered in 4 hours while going downstream = 4 ( x + 2 ) km

( ∴ Distance = Speed × Time )

Distance covered in 5 hours while going upstream = 5 ( x - 2 ) km

( ∴ Distance = Speed × Time )

Since ,

The distance between the two ports in same , therefore,

4(x + 2) = 5(x - 2) => 4x + 8 = 5x - 10

=> 10 + 8 = 5x - 4x ∴ x = 18

Therefore the speed of the streamer in still water is 18 km/h.

Check :

Speed in downstream

= (18 + 2 ) km/h = 20 km/h

Speed in upstream

= (18 - 2) km/h = 16 km/h

Distance covered in downstream

= 4 × 20 = 80 km

Distance covered in upstream

= 5 × 16 = 80 km
