Strength of the Indian Political System-

1 Parliamentary form of Government- India has the west minster system of parliamentary form of government where the power is with the PM of India rather president of India. Indian president is just the representational head.

2 Written Constitution – Indian constitution is one of the largest written constitutions of the world with 448 Articles in 25 parts, 12 schedules. The Indian constitution is known for its rigidity, flexibility. It is one of the best constitution of world and even it has almost every parts of world’s best features, characters etc.

3 3 type of government system- Indian has 3 systems of government – at the centre level- central Government, at the state level-state government and at the district level it is Panchayati Raj Institutions and municipality institutions.

4 Independent Election commission and elections- The system of Indian election is known across the globe which is best in terms of conducting elections on large scales. EC conducts free and fair elections all across India in terms of Loksabha , Rajyasabha and state elections in due time.

5 Federal government- The Indian political system is federal in nature although the word federal is not mentioned anywhere in the constitution.

6 Secular, sovereign, independent republic- India is secular, sovereign republic which means anybody can practice its own choice in religion and state has nothing to do with it. Republic means people choose their leaders among themselves who serves their rights on larger basis.

7 Universal franchise- India is one of the largest democracy in the world where the right to vote has been given to everyone post India’s independence in 1947 which was even not given to the most of the developing & developed countries of the world till 1975. E.g. Switzerland, USA etc. The voting right has been given irrespective of caste, creed, sex or any other basis or for that matter on the property or anything else as pre-required conditions.

8 Indian style of competent Bureaucracy- The bureaucracy in India is highly competent and one of the best in the world in terms of merit, competitiveness etc. The Bureaucrats are being selected by the central government and placed for working with state government. Indian civil services are one of the toughest exams of the world where the competition is very high to get chosen as best amongst each 1000 people.

9 Independent Comptroller and auditor general- Under Article 148 of Indian constitution the comptroller and Auditor general are mentioned whose work is to look after the allocation of funds. For its unique nature it is called as Guardians of public exchequer.

10 Independent Judiciary- In the written constitution of the India, the role of judiciary is independent and unbiased. It’s the 3rd arm of the country’s running machinery and others are legislatures and executives of the constitution.

Weakness of the Indian political system-

1 Corruption – The Indian political system is known for its higher corruption rates in the world. As per the corruption Index 2015, India stands at 85 out of 175 countries.

2 Coalition politics- India is known for its coalition politics as in it majorly different parties work together with some compromise to lead the government business. Due to coalition majorly development aspect is derailed.

3 Large number of pending cases in the judicial system- There are almost 10 lacs cases pending in the various courts of India which is serious blot on Indian political system.

4 Communal riots- the communal riots are being organized to win the election and propagate the tension amongst the minorities by the majority ruled rightist organizations.

5 Criminalizations of politics- The criminal background cases are pending almost every people of the major political parties which are a blot on the Indian political system.

6 Rights of poor, down trodden and marginalized sections are neglected- As India is having huge number of population which is poor, below poverty line and even unable to feed themselves. The rights of them are almost neglected by the so called elites of the society.

7 Regional disparities among various states- In terms of development the disparities are very much seen amongst the states of India which is again a blot in terms of politics like Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa are poor while Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamilnadu are developed despite the approx 70 years of independence.

8 Diversity of India- sometimes the diversity of India also become the blind spot on the part of Indian political system as there are almost 23 languages across the nation and people are always discriminated on the basis of languages in different –different states.

Strengths:-

1. Regular elections in India.

2. the people have elected representatives of their choice to form the government.

3. our constitution see the formation of panchayats.

4. the local self government bodies have taken democracy to the grassroots level.

Weakness:-

1. the use of vast sums of money to win elections.

2. A dominant caste or political group often forcibly prevents other castes or political groups from taking part in elections.

3. voters quite often vote only for candidates of their own caste.

4. all this means that the best candidate does not necessarily win.
