Primary sector or agricultural sector of India is characterized by self employment means that people work on their on lands. Agriculture is the sector which is mainly carried out in rural areas where people are too illiterate to get a desk jobs in urban areas.They migrate to urban areas as workers but most of them remain in the informal sector in which they are paid poorly and there is no law regulation.So,they prefer staying back and to earn their living they work on their lands and sell the produce.For this, they don't hire any labor but the whole family has a role to play in the cultivation and harvesting process.So,in this way they are self employed.
