Carbohydrates are a class of chemical compounds . Many but not all carbohydrates are nutrients. Your clothes may be made of cotton or linen, consisting mainly of cellulose which is a carbohydrate. I suppose you don't eat your clothes.

Concerning Bruno da Gama's post and Jason's and Mira Calton's work, bread, vegetables etc are not carbohydrates, they contain carbohydrates, as well as other nutrients in lower proportions. Casually calling carbohydrate-rich food "carbs" is a new phenomenon.

Now to the name: carbohydrates have the empirical formula C(x)(H2O)(y). For example, the empirical formula for glucose and fructose is C6H12O6, which can be also written as C6(H2O)6; sucrose (cane sugar) has C12H22O11 or C12(H2O)11, so early chemists thought that carbohydrates are a combination of carbon (C) and water (H2O), from Latin 'carbo' (coal) and Greek 'hydor' (water).

hey mate here is your answer...

The general empiricalstructure for carbohydrates is (CH2O)n. Monosaccharides, which are simple sugars that serve as fuel molecules as well as fundamental constituents of living organisms, are the simplestcarbohydrates, and are required as energy sources. The most commonly known ones are perhaps glucose and fructose.

hope it helps!
