In the centre there is a nucleus with neutrons and protons present in it. And the electrons are present around the nucleus in different shells. The first shell can contain maximum 2 electrons, second shell can contain 8 while the third shell can contain 18 shells. To calculate the maximum number of electrons a shell can contain
 {2n}^{2}
where n is the number of the shell
The Shells are named as K, L ,M ,N etc

Hope this helps you!!
