The atmosphere has a layered structure. It extends roughly up to 1600 km above the earth but more than 90% of it is found within 32 kilometre from the earth surface.Our atmosphere is divided into five consecutive layers starting from the earth surface. This is a thin buffer zone between each of the layers. This division is based largely on the temperature variation observed in the atmosphere with height. the five main layers are :-

1. Troposphere
2. Stratosphere
3. Mesosphere
4. Thermosphere
5. Exosphere
