Tetrahedral – the hybridization of one s and three p orbitals produce four hybrid orbitals oriented toward the points of a regular tetrahedron, 109.5° 109.5° apart. CH3 (methyl free radical) has a planar structure with sp2 hybridization of ‘C’ atom. The odd electron is present in unhybridized 2pz orbital.

(methyl carbonium ion) also has trigonal planar structure (sp2).

(methyl carbanion) has tetrahedral structure (sp3) and one of the hybrid orbitals contains the lone pair of electrons.

The carbanion has 3 bonding pairs and one lone pair. Thus, VSEPR theory predicts a tetrahedral geometry and a trigonal planer structure.
