Answer:

To trash it all and walk away is the easiest choice, but what are the consequences of this?

Landfills are silent, pernicious beasts that we feed every week at the curb and never acknowledge. Lead, carcinogens, and hundreds of chemicals whose risk to humans is still unknown seep from landfills, destroying the purity of our groundwater.

How do we so easily miss an opportunity to contribute to healthy communities and clean ecosystems? Lack of awareness, confusion about what is recyclable or compostable, and under utilization of existing waste services has stalled progress. Would you know where to drop off your old computer? Do those food scraps on your dinner plate go into the garbage can? How many times have you stood in front of recycling and trash bins, guessing what to do?

These decisions are more than an annoyance. If we go through the effort to put something in the recycling or compost bin but it doesn’t belong, the entire bin may just be rerouted back to landfills due to contamination.
