The total amount of money that the student had was ₹300.

Given:

the proportion of money spent on books = 1/2

the proportion of money spent on notebooks = 1/3

amount of money left = ₹50

To Find:

the total money that the student initially had

Solution:

let the initial amount of money be x

Then, the amount spent on books = x/2

amount spent on notebooks = x/3

Thus, amount left = x - x/2 - x/3

= (6x - 3x - 2x)/6

= x/6

⇒ x/6 = 50

x = 50 × 6

x = 300

Thus, the total amount of money that the student had was ₹300.
