Explanation:

Since the friction is due to the interlocking of irregularities in the two surfaces which slide with respect to each other, it increases when the two surfaces are pressed harder.

When we apply brake sot the bicycle, a force of friction generates between the rim of the bicycle and the brakes. The friction is produced in opposite direction of motion. Thus, the bicycle is stopped.

There are two methods of increasing friction: one is by making the surfaces rough and the other by increasing the mass of the object that is moving. For example, the tyres of vehicles have treads (these are the 'designs' that you can see on the tyre surface), which increase the friction between the tyre and the road.

We deliberately increase friction by using brake pads in the brake system of bicycles and automobiles. When we are riding a bicycle, the brake pads do not touch the wheels. But when we press the brake lever, these pads arrest the motion of the rim due to friction

A smooth surface can be made rough with the help of sandpaper. There are more irregularities on a rough surface than on a smooth surface. Thus, sand paper helps in increasing friction; by increasing the roughness of a surface. ... Thus, friction is beneficial as well as harmful.
