• One of the major bridges in India, known as the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, is a cable-stayed bridge between the Western Suburbs and Nariman Point in Mumbai.
• Two key geometrical aspects of the construction of the Bandra Worli Sea Link are triangles and arches.
• Triangles are used to make the construction of bridges sturdy. In the construction of bridges, triangles are preferred over squares because a square has four sides, so if pressure is put on the top the structure runs a risk of collapsing.
• However, since a triangle has three sides, it is not easily collapsible even if pressure is put on the top vertex.
• Bridges, including the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, have reflectional symmetry. This means that an imaginary vertical line can be drawn through the structure such that the left and right sides are symmetrical. This symmetry is important so that both sides of the bridge can bear weight equally.
