The progesterone suspends the ovulation during pregnancy, and maintains a foetal connection with the uterine wall and also controls the development of foetus in the uterus. The estrogen and progesterone stimulate the overall development of the mammary glands during pregnancy.

Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) is a hypothalamic hormone that is secreted by the hypothalamus. It stimulates the anterior lobe of pituitary gland to secrete the luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).  

The hormones stimulate the growth of ovarian follicles and development of egg within the follicle.  After ovulation, remaining parts of the Graafian follicle transform as the corpus luteum.  

The corpus luteum secretes a large amount of progesterone that is essential for the maintenance of an endometrium which is thus required for implantation of the embryo and other events of pregnancy.
