(iii) Indian culture gives importance to education of men compared to education of women. Men are believed to be the bread winners while women are considered home makers. So this leads to men having continuous education. So the literacy rate of male is higher.

(iv) Due to the above reason, it many rural areas most women do not complete school education. So the literacy rate of women is lower in India.

(v) In India, the number of literate population is divided by the total population multiplied by 100. For male and female too, the same method is followed to obtain the literacy rate.
