1 number corresponds to the Butterfield-Overland Trail.

  • John Butterfield's line travelled south through Texas, the New Mexico Territory, Fort Yuma, which is located close to present-day Yuma, Arizona, and Southern California, before continuing on to San Francisco. This route is known as the "oxbow route" and avoided the Rocky Mountains and significant winter snowfall. San Diego was avoided.
  • Because of this, "The Butterfield Trail" is still the most popular name for the Southern Overland Trail. The trail was constructed in two parts: the 462-mile (744-km) section from San Francisco to Los Angeles and the remaining 2,238-mile (3,602-km) section to Tipton, Missouri.
  • The Butterfield (or Southern) Overland Mail was a semiweekly mail and passenger stage service that ran from St. Louis, Missouri, and Memphis, Tennessee, through northern Texas to San Francisco, California, from September 15, 1858, until March 1, 1861. This 2,759-mile route passed through El Paso, Texas, Yuma, Arizona, and finally California; under ideal circumstances, it took 23–25 days to complete the trip.
