The structure of the kidney is bean shaped, with concave and convex surfaces being observed in each kidney. A concave surface called the renal sinus (renal renal hilum) is the point from which the renal artery enters this organ and passes out the renal vein and ureter.

The renal material, or parenchyma, is divided into two main structures: the renal cortex in the upper part and the renal medulla within it. Altogether these structures form a cone-shaped form of eight to eighteen renal lobes, each with a renal bark covering a portion of the medulla, called the renal pyramid (of Malpighi). [2]Between the renal pyramids are bulges of bark, which are called renal columns (Bertin's). Nephrons, the functional structures that produce urine of the kidney, extend from the bark to the medulla. The initial purulent part of a nephron is the renal corpuscle located in the bark, followed by a renal tubule running deep through the bark into the medullary pyramids. A medullary ray, a part of the renal cortex, is a group of renal tubules that emptied into a single collecting duct.
