The alkalinity of water is its capacity to neutralise acid. The amount of a strong acid needed
to neutralise the alkalinity is called the total alkalinity, T, and is reported in mg l-1 as CaCO3
The alkalinity of some waters is due only to the bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium. The
pH of such water does not exceed 8.3 and its total alkalinity is practically identical with its
bicarbonate alkalinity.
