I think the world wouldn’t be anywhere close to what it is today. There wouldn’t be buses, cars, buildings, laptops, robots, etc. let alone devising complicated policies or running a government. Language in a way has bought humanity to where it is today because it is fairly easier and faster for us to communicate our ideas through this medium compared to other forms of communication. As a child, I remember talking to curtains, bags, or anything in general because I thought that tables, cups, and other inanimate objects had life in them. I would go as far as to protect some of these things when I thought they ‘felt threatened’ by my brother’s arrival. While such behavior is a little amusing to me, it is also very intriguing as I look back on it now. It was almost like a Table had obtained ‘more meaning’ or rather a sense of purpose in life just because my brain formed the word table in my head at spat it out in the form of unique sounds curated by my vocal chord and tongue, which somehow led me to value that object than I would otherwise. In short, As cliche as this might sound, The ability to express ourselves through words is one of the most important skills that separates us from other species. Listen to ‘Words’, a podcast by Radiolab. It’s a really interesting podcast about words and how we humans perceive them.
