The Rebellion of 1857, also known by the names of the Great Rebellion and the Indian Mutiny has multiple religious, social and political causes.

Explanation:

The most triggering cause was the exploitation of the Indian economy at the hands of the British. People of all religions faced high revenue demands that affected their livelihoods badly.  

The British took big political decisions about the sub-continent without involving the Hindu and Muslim leaders that incited them for revolt. Moreover, the British were against many Hindu customs such as "Sati" that made Hindus think that their religion was under threat.
