Under the Ujjwala gas scheme, started during the first term of the Modi government for the poor, gas cylinders are given free of cost to beneficiaries.the government announced a financial package for those hit the hardest by the lockdown. Included in it was a promise of provide free gas cylinders for three months to those covered by the Ujjwala gas scheme. The scheme covers more than Rs 83 million people, with Uttar Pradesh having the highest number of almost 15 million.
