1. Describe the circumstances leading to the outbreak of revolution protest in France.

  • Due to the long war with England had drained the financial resources of France.
  • So, to meet it's regular expenses like to maintaining the army, the court and running government offices the state forced to pay more taxes.
  • The clergy to increased its share of taxes called tithes from the peasants and at last all members of the third estate had to pay taxes definitely to the government.
  • It includes direct tax called Tithes and indirect taxes on goods of everyday consumption like Salt and tobacco.
  • The burden financial activities of the state was borne by the third estate.
  • In 18th century witnessed the emergency of new social groups collectively known as Middle Class. They believed that no group in society should be privileged by birth. Some philosophers like John Locke envisaged a society based on freedom and equal rights for all.

Yes, I agree with the view that the message of universal rights was beset with contradictions. Because

  • The contradictions of universal rights was prepared by National Assembly which do not direct involvement of all the people except a few like highest tax payers and that to 25years etc. So, it truly didn't represent people voice.
  • However, it supported the great principles of liberty, equality etc.
  • The Declaration of Right of Man was perhaps the first attempt in the world to draw the out line of universal rights on a huge scale.
  • It was a laudable attempt. It laid emphasis on the fundamental principles of liberty, equality and fraternity.
  • All democratic countries adopted such principles.
