Answer:
1. The inertia of the dust particles residing on the carpet resists the change in the carpet's motion. Therefore, the carpet's forward motion exerts a backward force on the dust particles, setting them in motion in the opposite direction. This is why the dust comes out of the carpet when beaten.
2. While the bus is moving, luggage tends to remain in inertia of motion state. When the bus stops, the luggage tends to resist the change and due to inertia of motion it moves forward and may fall off. That's why it is advised to tie any luggage kept on the roof of a bus with a rope.
3. Momentum of an object is defined as the product of its mass and the velocity with which the object is moving.
Let velocity of the object be v and its mass be m
∴Momentum, P=mv
4. Newton's second law of motion is F = ma, or force is equal to mass times acceleration.
5. Mass of the hammer (m) = 500 g = 0.5 kg
The initial velocity of the hammer (u) = 50 m/s
The nail takes time to stop the hammer (t) = 0.01 s
The velocity of the hammer (v) = 0 (since the hammer finally comes to rest)
From Newton’s second law of motion
f = m (v – u) / t
Where f = force
f = 0.5 × (0 – 50) / 0.01
f = -2500 N
-ve sign indicates the force of the nail on the hammer moving in the opposite direction to that of hammer movement.
