Literally, नमः (namah) is a noun meaning “bending down” (another word is नतिः (natih)).
And when using during greeting, नमः implies “(मम) नमः (तुभ्यम्) “my नमः (bowing down) to you”. And due to this convention only a single word नमः will suffice to mean all that.
