The Native ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan was forced to make it a subsidiary state. But he refused doing so. It finally became the subsidiary state after the British victory in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. According to the terms followed, no princely rulers had right to possess independent armed forces. They should be only taken care by the subsidiary forces of the East India Company for which they got charged. If they failed to make the payment, then a part of the territory will be taken as penalty.
