x + y = 7 (1)

3x - y = 1 (2)

we first express the value of x in terms of y from the equation x + y = 7

x = 7 - y (3)

Now, putting the value of x in eq (2)

3( 7- y ) - y = 1

21 - 3y - y = 1

21 - 4y = 1

- 4y = 1 - 21

- 4y = - 20

y = 5

Putting the value of y in eq (3)

x = 7 - y

= 7 - 5

= 2
