X + y = 10. 1st equation

2x + y = 16. 2nd equation

X = 10 - y. 3rd equation

put the value of 3rd equation in. 2nd equation

2 ( 10 - y ) + y. = 16

20 - 2y + y = 16

20 - y = 16

-y = 16 - 20

-y = -4

y = 4

put the value of y in 3rd equation

X = 10 - y

X = 10 - 4

X = 6
