the \: sum \: of \:  \frac{1}{4}  \: and \:  \frac{ - 3}{8}  \\  \\  =  \frac{1}{4}  +  \frac{  - 3}{8}  \\  \\  =  \frac{2 +  - 3}{8}  \\  \\  =   \frac{ - 1}{8}  \\  \\  \\  \\ the \: additive \: inverse \: of \:  \\   \frac{ - 3}{8}  +  \frac{2}{7}  \\  \\  =  \frac{ - 21 + 16}{56}  \\  \\  =  \frac{ - 5}{56}  \\ is \:  \frac{5}{56}

now what we have to do is to subtract
  \frac{ - 1}{8} from  \frac{5}{56 }

so
 =  \frac{5}{56}  -  -  \frac{1}{8}  \\  \\  =  \frac{5 + 7}{56}  \\  \\  =  \frac{12}{56}
