So, let me cite some examples from the freedom fighters and nationalists, who failed many times before achieving success :-

First of all, I must say the name of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak; He was a staunch nationalist (Radical), and did not like the begging methods of the Moderates. Hence, he decided to resign from the Congress.
He stayed away from Congress for 9 years. Later, he was brought back my Annie Besant, and then he attained the title of "Lokmanya" (followed and respected by the people).

Secondly, take the example of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. His ideas totally clashed with those of Gandhiji's. Subhash wanted agitative methods, i.e., he said, "If the British will take arms, even we need to hold arms against them!" Whereas, Gandhiji followed total non-violence. Subhas even defeated Gandhiji's candidate, Sitaramayya, in an election and became the President of the Congress. Still, he valued Gandhiji and he himself resigned from the Congress.
And what of him?
In 1939, he formed the Forward Bloc, which is still remembered by the people because of its achievements. He formed the Indian National Army (INA), and became its SUPREME COMMANDER. Netaji is still remembered by us. He is still alive in the minds and hearts of millions of Indians.

Third, let me mention the name of Gandhiji. What did he do?

He went to South Africa to do a job in a firm as a lawyer. There, he was subject to Racial discrimination. Gokhale brought Gandhiji in the political scene of India. In India, at first, Gandhiji's views were not valued. Later, as he started the Satyagraha, then the Non-Cooperation movement, after joining the Congress, he became popular. In fact, he had to go to jail multiple times for his acts.

Lala Lajpat Rai: He was known as the Sher-i-Punjab because of his heroic deeds. He, too, resigned from the Congress in search of some bold actions against the British. In his demonstration against the Simon Commission, he was badly hit by General Saunders, and welcomed death. He said, "Every blow of Lathi on my body will become a nail in the coffin of the British empire."

Surendranath Banerjee: He failed many times to develop feelings in the minds of the Indians. later, by criticizing the repressive measures like the Arms Act and the Vernacular Press Act through his newspaper, the Bengalee, he won the hearts of Many INDIANS.

And there are many more people whom we do not know:
Karambir Singh Kang: He was the Hotel Manager of the Taj in Mumbai, and played a great role in saving his guests in the Taj. However, he failed to save his own wife and children. Still, he is happy, as he still works at the Taj, and is remembered by many.

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan: During the Mumbai Terrorist Attack, he failed to save his brother, Sardar Gajendra Singh, but fought bravely with the Terrorists, and himself fell dead.

Hemant Karkare, failed to save his comrades DIG Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar. He was gunned down by the terrorists near the Cama Hospital, but still, he is remembered by many (in Mumbai).

Sandra Samuel, the Indian Nanny, failed to save a two-year old child's parents, when Nariman House was attacked. However, she was successful in saving the two-year old child, Moshe, due to which, she is still remembered.

Last but not the least, I won't forget to mention the name of Muhammad Taufeeq Sheikh. He was popularly known as Chotu Chaiwala. He was just a child, who could not save his parents in the Terrorist Attack outside the CST station in Mumbai; however, he is known because of his attempts to make the injured reach the hospital.
