Given : Successive discounts are of 20% and 15%

To find : The equal single discount.

Solution :

We can simply solve this mathematical problem by using the following mathematical process.

Let, the price of an article = Rs. 100

Price after first discount of 20% = 100 - (100 × 20/100) = 100 - 20 = Rs. 80

Price after second discount of 15% = 80 - (80 × 15/100) = 80-12 = Rs. 68

Total discount = Initial price - Price after second discount = 100-68 = Rs. 32

Percentage of total discount = 100 × (Total discount/ Initial price) = 100 × (32/100) = 32%

Hence, the single equal discount is 32%
