5. STRUCTURE OF A TOOTH

You have learnt that teeth, present in the mouth cavity, play

an important role in biting and chewing the food. In an adult

human being there are four types of teeth - - incisors,

canines, premolars and molars.

Fixed to the gums, each tooth has following three parts

(Figure.8):

(i) Root, the part embedded in the jaw,

(ii) Crown, the top part projecting above the gums, and

(iii) Neck, the part between the root and the crown.
