sugar is dissolved in water there is no increase in the volume which characteristics of matter is illustrated by the observation

In water, there are empty gaps between two molecules called as inter molecular space. When sugar is added to water it dissolves and occupies these empty space, thus the volume does not increase as sugar molecules are occupying vacant space and not adding to the existing space.
