Democracy is a form of government in which the people have the right to decide legislation thoughtfully or to select governing officials to do so. These can be named as direct democracy and representative democracy.
It is extremely essential for everyone to maintain and protect the democracy and it can be done in several ways. Some of them are:
(1) A system for choosing and substituting the government through free, fair and frequent elections. Every citizen should have freedom of involvement and expression.
(2) Effective and active participation of people, as citizens, in politics and civic life, since democracy depends on the democratic attitudes and beliefs of the people of a country.
(3) Protection of the human rights of all citizens. Human rights are basic rights of a human being. They represent key ethics in our society such as equality, fairness, respect, and dignity. They are a significant means of defence for us all, especially those who may be subjected to exploitation, abandonment and seclusion.
(4) There should be a respect for the rule of law by each and every citizen. The rule of law is essential for a country that sticks to the rule of law results in a society where all persons and organisations including the government are subject to and answerable to the law.
Keystones of democracy include freedom of gathering, association, property claims, liberty of religion and speech, comprehensiveness and equality, citizenship, approval of the administration, right to vote, without gratuitous deprivation by the government of the right to life and liberty, and minority entitlement.
