Extraneous variables can be quite a challenge for both internal and external validity of an experiment.

Against the willingness of a research and its researcher, they may create an impact on the variable that are dependent and may also affect the outcome of an experiment.

Two techniques by which extraneous variables in an experimental situation can be controlled are as follows.

(1) Randomization: Through this approach, treatments can be randomly assigned to an experimental group.

It is assumed that outside factors are present in same amounts in all groups.

This technique may only work when the sample size is huge.

(2) Matching: It is another good technique to match the different groups of confounding variables.

Different confounding variables like age, gender, income etc. can be distributed equally among a group.

It may sometime become difficult to match within all the groups.

Another drawback of the process is that, sometimes the matched characteristics may not work for a dependent variable.
