Disaster management in a laboratory and a canteen ought to be done keeping two things in mind, viz. fire and combustion. First of all, there must be a few fire extinguishers kept in them, which must be regularly checked and kept ready; the number of fire extinguishers to be installed would depend on the area of these places and the maximum number of people present at any given time. There must be adequate number of windows to let in fresh air or for the smoke to escape in the event of a fire. Exhaust fans must be installed and run whenever these places are in occupation and use. Minimum of combustible substances or substances that catch fire easily must be stored, like petroleum products, clothing etc. First aid facilities ought to be kept ready for use. Easy escape routes, i.e. multiple doors, should also be available.
