As people increasingly take up social distancing, social media is an appealing way to stay in contact. But, it can also be a source of fake news and bad advice regarding COVID-19.
Here, Jeff Hancock, a professor of communication in Stanford University’s School of Humanities and Sciences and founding director of the Stanford Social Media Lab, shares why these deceptive messages are appealing and what people can do to avoid bad advice.
The first tip is to get your info from established news sources, not social media.
Practical strategies that you could abide by to prevent yourself from spreading fake news about a life-threatening diseases are:
- Do your research:
If you come across a piece of information on social media, before blindly believing it, use you search engines to fact check it. If the message contains information such as the list remedies of a certain disease, check the WHO (World Health Organization) website to verify the remedies.
However, you should rarely ever believe such messages and consult a doctor/physician regarding any issues you are facing. Also, advice other people to do the same.
- Check for inclusion of any verified organization/doctor in the message:
If the information you read is seen to be quoted by any renowned specialist/physician/personality, cross check if it is quoted right and research more about this said specialist/physician/personality.
If a verified health website is credited to be the source of the information, go on the website to read further about the topic before sharing the information with other people.
- Ignore messages on social media which ask you to contact the sender for diagnoses or any consultation:
The messages which ask you for your contact/personal information or ask for you to contact their senders are most likely phishing you.
They intend to scam us into paying them or perform fraudulent activities with our personal details.
We must report, block and spam these messages and never forward them to anyone else.
- Never believe messages that clearly look opiniated:
Some of this messages contain information that is silently promoting an agenda. When it is criticizing one health organization while praising other we must recognize that it is coming from a political standpoint. These messages shall be reported as they might hurt the sentiments of some people.
