In order to establish and sustain a democracy you must have;

• Freedom of the Press

• Transparent and Fair elections

• A simple and proportional electoral system

• Freedom of protest and speech

• Separation of Church and State

• Separation of the judicial, executive and legislative branch

• Devolved/local elections to elect representatives to decide upon local issues

• An Independent judiciary, hence not elected

• A healthy multi-party system, representing all dominent ideologies

• Freedom of association

• Freedom of the Internet

• A military and secret service empowered but fully controlled by the civilian government

• Strong anti-corruption laws and nepotism checks

• A system of checks and balances between all branches of government

• A coalition of independent watchdogs that safeguard institutions and assess politicians

• An independence secret service and electoral commission

• Universal sufferage, for over the age of 16/18, with little to non voter ID laws, preferably with automatic voter registration

• Lastly, a robust education system that would includes politics courses and civics/ethics lessons

This is only a smidge of the many important boxes to tick in building a healthy democracy and yet you will find very few countries that tick every box I’ve listed. A few of these can be waved such as a simple and proportional electoral system, which has its own downfalls, however others are crucial, such as Freedom of association.

These are my core guidelines to building a democracu
