It will react with HCl to form a water-soluble salt.

So add a bit of conc HCl, and shake. Separate the organic and aqueous layers. The nitrobenzene will be in the organic layer.

Then add NaOH to the aqueous layer, and phenylamine will appear as an emulsion, which you can separate off.

The reaction is:

C₆H₅NH₂ + HCl → C₆H₅N⁺H₃Cl

Separate now after shaking

Now, add NaOH

C₆H₅N⁺H₃Cl + NaOH → C₆H₅NH₂ + NaCl + H₂O
